It was a simple and normal qso Georg Intzoglou did at one midnight in Juli 1999. During the conversation he received the 58 years old greek located in Esslingen (Germany) a very weak signal “mayday, mayday”. After he received the emergency call, he canceled his normal conversation and began to help. He got to know that a sailor was disabled and adrift with direction to the rocky coast of messina. Georg got the exact geo coordinates of the boat.
With this information DL4SV informed the local police which transferred the information to the german ministry of interior and Federal Armed Forces and at last the Italian coast guards received the need of help.
A few minutes after that Georg heared from the sailer that he saw lights where coming closer to his boat. The coast guards arrived and could drag the sailboat “Nostalgia” to the harbor of Rocella Ionica.
On the boat where five german yachtsmen which could have been saved from the Italian coast guards cause a shortwave transceiver and a fast reaction of Georg Intzoglou.
