Specially permitted UK Callsign issued by UK Ofcom for use at Norman Lockyer Observatory, Sidmouth to commemorate the International Year of Astronomy and 400 years of Telescope Astronomy. The year-long event, known as IYA2009, was supported by UN, UNESCO, NASA and IAU. IYA2009 also celebrated 140th Anniversary of the discovery of Helium in our Sun by Sir Norman Lockyer of Sidmouth Observatory, 120th Anniversary of birth of Edwin Hubble, and 40th Anniversaries of Apollo 11 Moonlanding 20th July 1969 and Apollo 12 Moonlanding 19th November 1969.
GB400IYA was an independent “IYA” awareness project, managed by active full members of the Norman Lockyer Observatory Society who are astronomers and full licensed radio amateurs. Please note that the Special Event Station had no connection with a radio group which meets at the Observatory.
