Previously operated as MW3FKY, but I have since ceased this callsign and now operate as GW1FKY. I am a member of the Barry Amateur Radio Society, South Wales,United Kingdom, and have had great pleasure operating onmany of the expeditions and special events ,eg GB5FI Flatholm Island ),GB0CCE HM Endeavor (Captain Cooks replica sailing ship) during its visit to Cardiff. GB0HMT ( The ex Royal Yacht escort tug boat "Golden Cross" which was rescued from the scrap yard by Suzie Wong and Captain White her husband and ex captain of the tug). The Barry group, south Wales also used GB0HMT, a special event station for "The world of Tugs in Time & Spaceoperating from Cardiff Bay during 2003" this was also an exhibition and a display on space vechicles to be used in a role with the International Space Station.
With the assistance of Barry Amateur Radio Society, I participated in the opening of the "International Space School Educational Trust" ( ISSET) which was set up at Penarth School in south Wales -UK. It was a major event attended by leading fiqures from NASA and the Space organisation in Russia .Students, teachers and our team also had the pleasure of meeting key astronauts and cosmonauts- Amateur Radio played a role with an event station and links set up with MIR and amateurradio operators throught the world
I am a member of the RSGB,Amsat-UK,Amsat NA as well as the Barry group also participated as a committee member for Amsat -UK and the Barry club. I operate via satellite and was pleased to make contact with over 60 stations in 16 countries (including South Africa) via AO-40 from Flatholm Island in the Bristol Channel using the call sign GB5FI. This event followed in the footsteps of Marconi. From thislocation he made the very first radio transmission across water to the main land coast in South Wales UK. Pioneering our hobby! He also predicted that one day man would also communicate via the heavens - I was pleased therefore as a member of the Barry ARS to make his dream and prediction another part of history. .
Followed this activation with a major link with the ISS and now continue to monitor orcontact other radio amatuersvia satellite.
Barry club operates from Flatholm Island (EU 124) every year on HF and other modes mainly for the IOTA, Marconi Birthday andLighthouse weekends. This is a very rare square and in great demand from many parts of the world.
The club has recently (2012) activated events for the 100 years ( TITANIC -CARPATHIA ) , Queens Silver Jubilee, also received award for partcipation in the Olympic Torch Route.Weare alsohonouredin being selected as one of only two " 2O12 Flagship Stations " for the Olympics and Paralympics. Look out forus operating as "2O12" -Wales. That is " TWO OSCAR ONE TWO WHISKY" - I will be QSL Manager
I continue to support and promote amateur radio and events on HF along with operating and supporting amateur satellite projects. My efforts gave me a great reward in having my callsign placed on the comm's PCB of the "DELFI -C3"amateur satellite, built by a wonderful team of students in Holland. A really good example of a team working together and dedicated to the project. " Members of the team also enjoyed the opportunity to become licensed radio amateurs and participate in our hobby" Good luck - enjoy!
