The special call sign IR1IPY has just been activated for the first time during the International Polar Year 2007 in Genoa, Italy.

Worldwide Antarctic Program Staff (WAP) and Italian Radio Sailor's Association (A.R.M.I.), announce the launching of IPY Special Call, which will be held from 00:00 GMT May 1th through 24:00 GMT of Oct. 30 th. 2007. The purpose of this special call is to improve Worldwide interest around Polars Continent and its related matters, to understand and share what the Nations and Organizations are doing to protect this still uncontaminated corners of the world.

IPY, organized through the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is actually the fourth polar year, following those in 1882-3, 1932-3, and 1957-8. In order to have full and equal coverage of both the Arctic and the Antarctic, IPY 2007-8 covers two full annual cycles from March 2007 to March 2009 and will involve over 200 projects, with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics. It is also an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate, follow, and get involved with, cutting edge science in real-time.

The contact with IR1IPY is valid 10 pt. for the International Sailor Award of A.R.M.I.

During activation, aside from the I.S.A. & WAP references, some newer ones will also be activated, such as that of the Italian Castle Award (DCI).

This invitation, is addressed to all Radio Amateurs (OMs & SWLs) around the world, and to the Clubs and Organizations who would like to join and share with us this initiative.
