Now the 570-V (575) Connection.

Since Dayton (2002) two of the group have decided to purchase new Yaesu Mark-V Field HF rigs. Hence the name change.

Field Day 2001 was held at the mountain QTH of KA3AIN and was the first time the five of us got together for Field Day. (Although in 1979 N3AEM, WB3AAC and W3HGT operated from a hilltop in southwestern PA)

Field day 2002 and 2003 were held at the home QTH of W3GQ on beautiful Lake Norman just north of Charlotte, NC

FD 2004 was at the W3HGT farm QTH in the PA Laurel Highlands near Confluence, PA

FD 2005 was at my QTH in Georgetown, Texas

FD 2006 was at the new WB3AAC QTH in Paris Landing, TN near the Land Between the Lakes

FD 2007 was back to the Laurel Highlands with a trip to the US Open Golf Tournament at Oakmont Country Club the week before Field Day

FD 2008 found us back on Lake Norman for the third time. We had one 'Old Timer', WA3ZOE, join us in NC for the first time. Bob also is retired IBMer and worked with the Pittsburgh contingent. The newest newcomer was Eric, KA8FAN, who is a long time friend of W3GQ. A good time was had by all.

FD 2009 - Operators were sort of scarce this year (4) with only three making the trek to Texas. As it turns out our score and QSO count suffered. But not our eating. This is the first year since probably some time in the 1970s that we operated 1A. With triple digit outside temperatures this was not the best year to be nostalgic! With any luck the next the rotation brings us back to NTX we'll have a real house, real antennae and go back to operating 1E like ole timers should!

The 570 Connection Quiz from W3GQ:

Which one of these guys:

--- Does not own a Kenwood TS-570 (G)?

+++ Update: Which two now own a Mark-V FT1000MP Field?

+++ Update: Which two now own a FT-2000D?

--- Does not own a linear amplifier? (This isn't valid any more. I finally got an Ameritron AL-811H just to stop the whining !)

--- Did NOT work for IBM?

--- Still lives in Pittsburgh? Now in the Laural Highlands of Pennsylvania.

--- Is mostly bald?

--- Has only 4 teeth? . . . and shved off his beard.

--- Just shaved his beard?

--- Grew a beard?

--- Is still contributing to Social Security?

To find the answer to any of these questions (and solve all the world's problems) please tune to 40M SSB, 7.163 and up, any weekday morning at 08:30 Eastern time local or 19:30 eastern Sunday and Wednesday evenings. Any, and every, one is welcome. Look at it this way, we're retired, old, bald, toothless, and 4 of 5 are retired IBM geeks. (The fifth spent hours and hours of stark boredom interrupted by seconds of shear panic!) It can't get any worse.

==========================================

First licensed as a General (N3AEM) on June 30, 1978 in Pittsburgh, PA. Back when the FCC only came to town four times a year. Then upgraded to advanced which became effective September 12, 1978. Upgraded to 'Extra Lite' (As N5IW calls it.) in May 2002. After twenty years in 5 land I changed my call to K5AEM in August of 2000.

Ran a Drake TR-4Cw until July, 2000 when I entered the 20th Century with a micro-processor based Kenwood TS-570S. Finally made the pilgrimage to Dayton May 2009 and made the giant step into the 21st Century with the purchase of a Yaesu Ft-2000D . Updated photos planned for after Field Day 2009.

Antennas are a Hy-Gain TH5-DX tribander at 33 feet with a Cushcraft A505S for 6M just a few feet below it on a Rohn 25 tower. A G5RV jr. has come down and will go RVing. A Carolina Windom 40 was added in August, 2001, to take it's place. A Cushcraft Ringo Ranger serves on 2M FM. The full wave 80M horizontal loop fed with 450 ohm ladder line became operational in August 2002 and is the best wire antenna I have ever used. It's only 16 feet high but has about a 6db gain over the Carolina Windom from Georgetown to Lake Norman on 40 metres.

Spent 3 years in the US Navy, January 1965 to December 1967. I'm always looking for mates who were in Guantanamo Bay any time in 1966 when I was stationed at the NAS there. Flew as a radio operator on C-47s, C-54s, and HU-16s. Went to Composite Squadron 6, VC-6 in February 1967 and mustered out in December 1967.

Hired on with IBM as a Customer Engineer in Pittsburgh in 1967. Then "I Been Moved" to the IBM Plant in Austin Texas in January 1980 when I moved to Georgetown which is about 30 miles north of Austin. Got nudged out of the business in 1993 and took a buyout and fully retired in December 1997.

Currently spending my time as a Big Game (Whitetail Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Imported Asian & African species, etc) Outfitter and Guide here in Texas.

When I'm home you may find me on 40M (7.178 and up) at 7:30 AM Central Time looking for / talking with WB3AAC, W3HGT, W3GQ, and KA3AIN. We solve a lot of the world's problems (if someone would only listen) so please join us if you hear us. All except W3GQ (Retired US Airway pilot) are retired IBMers and W3HGT is the only one still surviving in Pittsburgh. He was very influential in me becoming a Ham.
