I was first licensed in 1960 as KN9ARZ (Novice Class) and after upgrading, have held the call K9ARZ for over fifty years. My primary mentor was the late William J. Nolan, W9TQL (former chief engineer for WLS RADIO, Chicago), Bill taught me how to build transmitters and amplifiers, and for this I am eternally grateful. Since then, I have built scores of transmitters, RF amplifiers, receivers, and antenna tuners. My primary rig now consists of a Kenwood TS-590S backed up by a TS-570DG, a Kenwood TL-922A Amplifier and a Mosley TA-33M Tribander up 40 feet. Special thanks to Carson McAfee, ZS8C for his contact and QSL which put me over the top for Mixed DXCC Honor Roll: 346/331.
My primary interests in amateur radio, center around DXing on all modes. Because of my age and years in radio I also like radios that "glow in the dark" and this is why I joined the Antique Radio Club of Illinois. I am also a member of the Fox River Radio League (Batavia, IL) and an ARRL certified Volunteer Examiner. I currently hold an Amateur Extra-Class Radio License (20 WPM version), and a Radar endorsed Commercial Radio-Telephone License (GROL, formerly 2nd Class Commercial) . I am a retired Geographer and hold B.S. & M.S. in Geography from Northern Illinois University. My other real joy in life are my grandchildren, with whom I spend much of my time.
