Retired from the Naval Air reserve after 20 years as a aircrewman radio operator in 1970. I was always interested in "HAM" radio. Decided to take the technician, general tests, in November of 2007. Two weeks later passed the extra test. With the help of W0XH,KA6TMQ,I got on the air. Living in a 3rd floor "green" apartment building; antennas created a concern. Needed low profile, with little room on the balcony. I have a Kenwood TS830 and a Kenwood TS 520SE.
