One would think that after sixty years of continuous, on-the-air ham radio I would have pretty much tried just about everything the hobby has to offer. Not so!

One of my favorite activities is to take my Yaesu FT-817ND camping in the nearby central California Sierra mountains. Operating from a picnic table at 6,000 feet above sea level with a self-contained station has been one of the most satisfying aspects of amateur radio ever …. that is, until I discovered HF Pack. Backpacking up a narrow, rocky path to an isolated mountain top with a complete station on my back is the best of the best.

For the longest time the idea of building up my own HF Pack never seemed feasible until I stumbled across the brainchild of Johnny Knight, WB4U shown here http://www.qsl.net/wb4u/hfpack/hfpack2.html. My setup is nearly a carbon copy of Johnny's design and used here with permission.
