In memory of Francis D "Frank" Hurlbut, III

Father to Chris, KL9A

Husband to Corliss, AL1G

Friend and elmer to many

March 27, 1955 - Nov 17, 2008

Frank was born March 27, 1955, at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, N.J., to Francis Dewey Hurlbut Jr. (KE7MP) and A. Levert Fodor.

He was the Alaska Region Frequency Management Officer for the FAA. Not only did he work from his office at the Federal Building, he was used as a national resource and was known as the pre-eminent radio frequency interference investigator for the whole of the FAA. It was not uncommon for him to be flown in to investigate an interference problem that had been going on for months. He would find and solve the problem in a matter of hours.

He loved his job and those he worked with. When speaking of retirement, he would always say that he had no desire to retire from the job he loved so much.

In his own words, Frank was an "enthusiast." He had many hobbies, most importantly, amateur radio. Most recently he was extremely active in building and maintaining world-class amateur radio contest station KL7DX in Willow, Alaska. Frank also enjoyed fishing, snowmachining, four-wheeling, shooting, gold mining, model airplanes, photography, homebrewing, geocaching and attending to his koi pond.

Frank exemplified the true ham spirit.  He was always willing to share his knowledge of ham radio and never thought any question was "stupid".  He loved to teach new hams and introduce them to the ham radio world.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and coworkers.
