CALL ME "WINDY" please. Family and friends do. I started shortwave listening at age 12 (1964) and progressed through amateur radio in high school. It was an adventure and an education that empowered my career. At age 17, I began wilderness backpacking. From that perspective, I saw technology and consumption destroying nature and society. My career was a response to that. For 25 years I supplied solar-electric systems for remote locations. I made them affordable by making the LOADS highly efficient*. When I felt that my pioneering was done and my company was growing more than I was, I sold it and retired in 2005. MY PRIMARY INTERESTS NOW ARE -- Sculpture -- Making and playing flutes -- Jazz study -- Wilderness experience -- Teaching practical skills to my grandkids -- Mentoring young adults in renewable energy and environmental careers -- Studying human culture, conflict, environmental degradation, and struggling to distill reality from the competing paradigms. RIG -- SOLD MY HF RIG in 2012. Sunspot cycle was a bust. Very few hams respond to any prompts to talk about topics other than their old worn grooves of radio topics. The internet has deprived me of much of the old magic. HF has become FOR ME all potential and little realization of anything interesting. PHOTO – Making flutes is analogous to making antennas, but I get better audio reports. * You can search "Windy Dankoff" and find a great many educational articles that I wrote.
