November 21st, 2009 - Finally upgraded to Extra

I enjoy QSLing and if I am mobile or contesting please QSL direct.  My Grid of DM83 is rare so please send me a card so I can get it confirmed for your FFMA.

I became a Tech in 2005 and a General in 2007.  I got my start in two-way radio back in the CB days of the mid-80's when I was 6.  My Grandfather, Harold, got me started on CB and we were the only radio guys in the family.  Our resemblances are more than just the hobby.

 Many in the family say I am his clone and it shows.  His early 20's US Navy pictures are like looking in a mirror.  He passed on in 1991 and I am the only Bryant on the air now.  I really think he would have enjoyed ham radio. He did QSL though and his old CB license was KDQ6382.  I studied hard to learn code and it was dropped before I was confident enough to try for element 1.  So I am a no code Extra.   I am very active on HF, primarily on CW, PSK31 and HF SSB Mobile.  I work as an electronics repair tech at a small shop in Lubbock.

I built the 5XH antenna (pictured above) in mid 2007 and finalized the design in early 2008.   It is 5 phased hamsticks for 5 bands.  40, 30, 20, 15, and 10 meters.  Each antenna is resonant on its own band and is fed by a phasing box I made.  QST said that their technical advisor's reviewed my article and will not publish it because "it will never work."  Ironically 2 months later the Octopus antenna was published.

5-16-09 -> I rebuilt the 5XH and added a vertical 20m hamstick to the mix, so it is in testing phase now.

9-6-09 -> 3SA - 160m vertical project has been built and is in testing.

10-7-09 -> Currently building a satellite/base antenna called 5XVU for VHF/UHF.

I QSL direct 100%.   I started QSLing with eQSL.cc.  I think it is a good service but too bad it doesn't qualify for ARRL awards, however it does now for CQ awards.  I got setup on Logbook of the World and what a pain in the a$$.  Wait for a postcard then wait for a file, and then try to convert all of the logs...UGGH!   There is nothing like getting a nice paper QSL card.   Above is my current card made by CheapQsls and they are awesome people to deal with.   Up in the corner is my old QSL card which I made back in summer 2007 but the photo printer went Kaputt!

73 and God Bless,

Joel

Here are some of my awards for 30MDG and EPC.
