Fire Prevention Week History

Mrs. O'Leary's cow starts the Great Chicago Fire

Some history of Fire Prevention Week here. One way or another, it started with the Great Chicago Fire of October 9, 1871. The legend is that Mrs. Catherine O'Leary's cow kicked over a kerosene lantern and started the blaze -- but Mrs. O'Leary was haunted by suspicion of arson for the rest of her life.

A Request to Hams in the Fire Business

For next year: We are looking for other hams who are also firefighters or who work in the fire prevention industry to run additional stations N0F and N9F in 2017. If you can organize and run a multi-operator special event in one of these areas, please see the "Helping" page on the hamfire.com website.
