I have been licensed for 25 years. Have held Novice, Technician, General, and now Extra Class tickets. Hold Commercial NARTE Master Technician certificate with Land Mobile, Broadcast AM and Broadcast FM endorsements.
Like many others, I got intersted in CB radio. Especially Santa Monica REACT(KFR9525 and KIK0588). Then a true Southern Gentleman from South Carolina Otice "Red" GallmanKF6D (SK) introduced me to "ham" radio. He helped me buy my first radio, a Yaesu 101EX. When I transfered to Sonoma County, GaryJackman[KF6JF/ W6GWJ (SK)] tormented me daily until I took and passed my novice test. Later got my technician license, then gave up HF while raising our son, who played soccer from age 4 to age 18, when he tried out for the Mens Olympic Developement Team. Meanwhile, I concentrated on VHF/UHF Public Service.
Retired after 37 years with a major Telecom doing Toll/SpecialService (Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Jose, Marin County, Sonoma County), Digital Transport (Sonoma County), and Commercial Radio and Television (San Francisco Television and Radio Operating Center [TVOC], San Ramon Corporate HQ).
I enjoy HF,VHF,UHF modes including ATV [was ATV Unit Leader-CDF/VIP, and ATV specialist RACES and Sonoma County Department of Emergency Services (DES/ACS)]. I am WAC, DXCC (210+), WAS (phone/digital), etc
STATION: I currently use a Kenwood TS-2000 100W on 6 through 40M, on a STEPPIR 3 ELE 30/40,up 35 feet,and a 80 M Dipole,on a MA-40 foot tower.
I like both ragchew, and am just getting my feet wet in DX contesting.
My primary interest has always been emergency communications. I have been a member of Gardena Police Department CB Monitor, Santa Monica REACT, Santa Clara Valley REACT, Sonoma County RACES, Cailfornia Department of Forest and Fire Prevention/Volunteer in Prevention (VIP), Pacific Telephone "SHARES", PacificBell National Securityand Emergency Preparedness (NSEP)/North Coast EOC Director, and currently Sonoma County Department of Emergency Services/ACS (Currently South Sonoma County Unit Asst. Unit Ldr.), and NOAA SKYWARN Spotter (SO#49).
I am second generation HAM. My dad Carl K6CMS was trained as a radioman in the Army and sent to Korea in 1947. When he got out, he too worked for the Telephone Company from Craft to District Level Technical Engineer. My wife Kathy worked for the Company 40 years, and retired as a Communications Technician.She is licensed as K6KBS. We enjoy doing public service events using 2M together.
Son is a Lt. in 3rd Stryker Team Combat Brigade, US Army. (No interest in radios, drat!)
