Originally licensed as G4AMJ in 1971, I've lived in Colorado for the past 30 years, operating as G4AMJ/W0, NQ0I and N7DR. Much of that time I have been constrained to be more or less inactive because of the punitive antenna restrictions in Boulder County. I participated in a lawsuit against the County; we won in Federal District Court but the County appealed and the US Court of Appeals for the 10th circuit found in their favour, essentially ruling that a 35' height limit in rural residential areas -- later reduced to 30' -- was permissible under PRB-1. I still find it hard to believe that the FCC intended that result when they enacted PRB-1, but they declined to become involved by clarifying PRB-1 to the court. After thirty years in Boulder Country I recently moved to Weld County. While hardly generous except to those living on large agricultural tracts, the antenna restrictions in Weld are considerably less punitive than those in Boulder (although, as seems to be true of restrictions almost everywhere, there seems to be no objective basis -- certainly none that's stated -- for the restrictions they have chosen to enact). I am president of a small software firm that sells VoIP security software for cable companies (http://www.ipfonix.com) and have written several novels (http://www.sff.net/people/N7DR). My most recent novel, Timeshift, an SF thriller, was published in early 2011. Although, apart from the action novel Nowhere to Run, my books contain no overt references to amateur radio, I do often include in-jokes or passing references for the amusement of fellow hams. For a change of pace I am currently working on my first non-fiction book for a decade, on quantum computing. I have a Facebook page (news and discussion about my books) at http://www.facebook.com/pages/D-R-Evans/53122479493, and am on Twitter (about books, radio and whatever else comes to mind) as N7DR. My web page (http://www.sff.net/people/N7DR) is mostly about books but also includes some radio-related material. I mostly operate HF CW, and try to QSL new bands and modes 100% through the buro.
