The radio amateur station of the Lahti Radio and TV Museum, 'The Arvi Hauvonen Memorial Station', is housed in the historical former longwave station of the Finnish Broadcasting Company on Radiomaki, Lahti's Radio Hill. The station was inaugurated in 1928. The OH3R radio amateur station has been named in commemoration of Arvi Hauvonen (1899-1973) in recognition of his work as a pioneer of Finnish broadcasting. He served as head of this longwave station from 1929 to 1967, began regular radio transmissions from Tampere in 1923, and was in the front rank of radio amateurs in the early years of the medium. Arvi Hauvonen was also a leading light of the Radio Museum when it opened its doors to the public in 1968. He served as honorary chairman of the Finnish Radio Amateur Association from 1969 to 1973. The OH3PP Arvi Hauvonen Memorial Station is at the disposal of visiting "hams" on production of a certificate of competence. Members of the Lahti Radio Amateur Club are responsible for the manning of the station and demonstrating the radio amateur activities. In addition to old amateur sets the Museum contains a number of wireless receivers dating back to the twenties. The old equipment of the longwave station is also on show. The Museum has its own radio studio, where programmes can be made. Also it is possible to study the history of Finnish television.
