Hello guys:

My name is Fred and I live in Olinda, near the big port of Recife the capital of Pernambuco State, Northeastern coast of Brazil, 150 meters from the Atlantic Ocean, just at sea level.I’m 66 years old and got my first call sign (PY7AZQ) in May 1969. Later in 1977 I changed to PY7ZZ. I was introduced to the wonderfull world of Amateur Radio by my father PY7EC – Mario now a Silent Key. He was my Elmer, my friend. A Ham since 1947, he started with AM and finished with SSB and when I was trying to put him to work in Digi-modes. We made a lot of very nice experiments with antennas together from Bom Jardim a small town 100 Kms from Recife during the 50’s/ 60’s. I remember I used to spend many hours looking for his qsl cards collection.

I worked as a Manager for a bank in the Import and Export Dept but I’m retired now.

I’m active on almost all bands (now from 6 to 40 meters only but hope to be able to operate also on 80/160 very soon since I moved to a new QTH two months ago with space for wire antennas). At the moment I have only the A4S for 10/15/20 meters and a vertical R7/wire dipole for the other bands. My station is IC756-Pro,IC736 IC718 and FT450D for HF and IC2200H for VHF, Drake MN2000 ant tunner and FL2100Z/SB200 amps. I use to be active in SSB/CW (beeing CW my favorite mode)and after December 2001 also on Digi-modes as RTTY, PSK-31, SSTV (thanks to Tony JA1FQI and Nori JA1WSK). My main activity is hunting entities/islands for DXCC/IOTA in each band/mode. I have all entities worked and confirmed - Mixed 341/362 and Phone 341/358 modes - and only need a valid qso with P5 in CW - 340/351 - to make all them in CW too what put me on the Triple TOP Honnor Roll List. In digi-modes my score is 331/330 in RTTY/PSK-31 needding1 more to the HONNOR ROLL NR 4 and 190 in SSTV. Now that we have an IOTA check point in Brazil (PT7WA) I finally sent my submission and with 1.008 islands submitted and accepted I am on the  IOTA HONNOR ROLL LIST. My score now is 1.038 worked and 1.037 confirmed.I’m also holder of 5BWAZ and 5BDXCC plaques and also have DXCC in the WARC bands (10 mhz – 333 entities, 18 Mhz – 338, 24 Mhz – 333) and 6 meters - 111. My main target is to have all entities in 40 meters using only wire/vertical antennas and need only a P5 qso to finish !!! I made several trips to Fernando de Noronha Islands (PY0ZZ – ZW0F – ZZ0F – and PY0FZ my permanent call sign for F.Noronha Islands) since 1981 (still have all the logs/qsls) and another trip to Trindade Island with a group of PY operators and N6FF/W9VA (PW0T). I made also several trips to Itamaraca Island SA-046 for IOTA - PY7ZZ/7.

If you need my qsl for any of the operations mentioned above (except PW0T via KU9C), send me your card to the address in this site with SAE/return postage (1 IRC/$2 is enough for Economic mail) and I will answer same way, same day. QSLs received directly without return postage will be answered via Bureau. Sorry but NO E-QSL please and also no LOTW since I don't keep any E-logs here. I still use and will ever use paper logs. So, see you around the bands/modes. Regards from Brazil.

Fred - May/2008.

PY2KW, Nelson Pala was a phys. ed. teacher at Avare' C.E.E.N.Cel. Joao Cruz High School. He eventually became the principal and was admired by parents and students. He taught me and other students the first steps of marching band, volleyball and in the art of Ham Radio.
