AGATHONISI, Greek island in the southeastern region of the AEGEAN SEA. Belonging to the prefecture of the Dodecanese, it has a length of 7 kilometers and a width of 3 kilometers. The length of it’s shoreline is quite great, reaching 31 kilometers. It’s the northernmost island of the Dodecanese chain, wich together with other Greek islands of the Aegean Sea, makes up the southeastern border of Europe with Asia. The island consists of three settlements. The Great Village with 158 inhabitants, is the largest and oldest settlement on the island, invisible from the sea for it’s own protection. Until the 14th century it was a pirate refuge. The two other settlements, St. George and the Little Village number just 15 inhabitants each. The main occupations of the inhabitants are fishing and animal husbandry. Agathonisi is an island of pristine beauty where the inhabitants continue to live the authentic island life. They are exceptionally friendly and open hearted and welcome their visitors with traditional Greek hospitality. Their houses are built in the traditional Greek island architectural style with lovely gardens. Small bays, harbors and golden sands complete a picture of beautiful beaches with crystal waters. The island is enrolled in the protective region NATURA 2000 as rare bird sanctuary. Agathonisi was inhabited originally by the ancient Greek tribe of Iones and was known by the name of Tragaia. It is the homeland of the wandering philosopher Theogitos, student of Aristotle, who also taught in Athens. Under Byzantine rule it was probably a place of exile. In 1088 at the expressed wish of Byzantine emperor Alexios Komninos to the monk Christodoulos the Worshipful, founder of the monastery of Patmos, Agathonisi became a monastery. On April 29, 1912 it was conquered by the Italians together with the rest of the Dodecanese, under whose rule it remained until September 8, 1943 when it passed to German rule. On March 7, 1948 it was reincorporated along with the remaining Dodecanese with Greece.
