TF3HQ is used in the annual IARU HF Championship contest. The callsign belongs to the club station of the national association of Radio Amateurs in Iceland, Íslenskir radíóamatörar (Í.R.A.).

The association was founded on August 14, 1946. Í.R.A. is a member society of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and IARU Region 1, as well as being a member society of the Nordic Amateur Radio Union (NRAU).
