              Steve VK3ZAZ (1968-1976)-(2006-current) VHF Operations

Most recent antenna revamping due to onset of seniors years, tower climbs are a risk at  the best of times so rationalising and lightening the tower was achieved by replacing the arrays with top to bottom. If you want to do it right use M2 or Cushcraft.

M2 9 EL SSB/FM bog standard out of the box 10db gain, using an RFC3-170 set VK3 ZL1 2M DX record in 2013.

432/144 dual 5 el cushcraft vertical for FM bands,

432 x 9 Cushcraft HOR for 432 SSB/CW 10db, worked into VK6 summer 2015-2016

7 element JHV 6M known for its clean pattern at  9db, removed the 9M2WL and replaced with this much lighter version.

Top is 6dbi  white stick for VK3RMV-1 fill-in digi on 145.175.

Tower is a Comet 75 footer owned since 1984.

 VK3ZAZ TIME LINE.

1968 Issued with VK3ZAZ permanently portable callsign due to my itinerant Broadcast Station duties in East Coast VK.

1969 Obtained BOCP #V9 from the PMG after studying at the RMIT Broadcast Annexe in Melbourne and working at AWA Aviation at Essendon Airport as an AME, whilst studying with the Marconi School of Wireless in Sydney. When I became  qualified in 1969, I received an appointment as a Brodcast Technician, at Radio 2GN Goulburn NSW.

In 1970 I obtained the position of Technician-in-Charge of Radio 2LT Lithgow, New South Wales. My speciality as a factory trained technician was AWA BTM series. The project at 2LT was to maintain aging AWA equipment and make provision for an upgrade to 5KW.  In 1971 I moved to Lubeck in Wimmera-Mallee Victoria and worked on the construction of new studios in Horsham to be linked to 3LK the current relay of Radio 3DB Melbourne. Using all new AWA studio and program equipment, a landline link was established to Horsham and Radio 3WM hit the airwaves on 1090 KHz in late 1971.

I returned to study Electrical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1973 and moved my station to the top of the great divide at Learmonth Victoria and in January 1976 went down to Radio 3HA Hamilton Victoria, to construct their new studios at 61 Brown Street following a disastrous fire in their VBN Gray Street studios which burnt the place out.

I stayed and married Shirley (VK3NSG) and raised two children and ran a local communications business from 1978 to 1992 when I went back to school to train as a technical teacher. During this period I worked as a contractor at 3BO FM 91.5 at Bendigo and 3CV Maryborough, also contracted to do service at 882 Radio 3YB Warrnambool  and back at 3HA Hamilton.

I retired from Full time Broadcasting in the new millenium but still do routine maintenance duties at Mt Dundas near Cavendish the site of five National 20KW transmitters on the FM band and Digital TV. Highlights in past five years were being able to SWITCH OFF ABWV Channel 5A running 10KW on 137-144 MHZ 5A band and parting out all the PAs to local hams for converion to 2M band. I was thus able to restore my station on 2M after 25 years of inactivity.

I elected to buy in antenna from M2 Inc USA based on my experience with those antenna from 1989 when many of the VK3 6M records were established. To this end I decided not to reinvent the wheel and concentrate on improving my station. Within a couple of years I had achieved acceptable weak signal performance levels and made several trans-Tasman contacts to new Zealand, but last summer missed the VK8 and will probably be the last VK to WAVK States on 2M requiring just one qso with VK8, the previous 7 being before 1976 during my previous tenure with the call-sign VK3ZAZ
