Please note, I may beoperating remotely via the inetrnet. Sometimes, I will loose my VOIP link or internet rig control connection. Please be patient whil ethe connection is re-established. I have been a Ham since the early-70s. I was first licensed at ~13 years old as WN2MJB. Shortly thereafter, I became a Tech and then my Advanced Ticket and became WB2MJB. I tried a couple of times for my Extra Ticket as a teen at the FCC Field Office in NYC on Houston Street where I took the Tech and Advanced exams. However, I became so nervous at the time that I failed to copy 1 minute straight of error-free code, although at home I was able to do well over 20 wpm. I was brought into Amateur Radio while in Junior High School by Doug Smith, K2KMX. The school club call was WB2SRJ. I will always be in debt to Doug Smith and his dear father, K2CY, may he rest in peace, for introducing me to this hobby. I remained WB2MJB since becoming a Tech until July 14, 2009, when I changed to W3DCB (my initials, Daniel Charles Baral). The change was over-due since I have been living in W3-land since ~1988 except for some time PCS in the USAF in Europe and elsewhere. My dear wife passed away in May, 1991, leaving me with 3 young children which is why I left active duty in in the USAF in 1992. I remained in the reserves until~2005. Was inactive from ham radio for a number of years and I am now once again quite active in the hobby. I had dreamed about having a really great station since I was a boy when I used to pour over the Heath-Kit catalogues, QST, CQ Magazine, 73, and Ham Radio magazines. My station includes an FTdx9000D as well as an Icom IC-7800 which are the crowns of the station. The station also includes an FT-2000with DMU & Mu-Tuners; Power Master digital watt meter by Array Solutions; Kenwood TS-2000; SPE Expert 1K-FA linear; two Palstar AT-AUTO HF automatic antenna tuners; Icom IC-910H for 1.2 GHz/UHF/VHF; Icom IC-375A for 220 MHz; Icom IC-1275A also for 1.2 GHz; Yaesu FT-897D; Flex-5000;and an Icom IC-R8500 receiver. There are various HTs. Most of my station can be run remotely. In the car, there is a Yaesu FT-857. This is a picture of my little friend, Sandy, who kept us company in the shack until a just few years ago. We lost her after ~14 years on December 17, 2009. We will always rember and love this wonderful friend who loved and served her family with such loyalty and dignity. Our family was joined by a little black lab named Sam who made his way into our hearts -- also through the SPCA of Baltimore.
Here is a picture of Sam.
Remote operation is made possible by the use of Berrhinger audio mixers & splitters which feed audio to and from each radio via RgBlasters which run audio to and from two computers. One computer interfaces the audio via Skype and another computer streams the VGA outputs from the IC-7800; FTdx9000D; Flex-5000 andFT-2000 via Epiphan VGA video grabbers as well asseveral cameras which offer several views of the station. Ham Radio Deluxe and other rig control software packages control all of the radios through the local ethernet via Glentek/Lantronix boards. The use of Glentek/Lantronix boards with the use of Tactical Port Re-Directing Software allows control of the various radios without having to go through a PC. The AC power to each piece of gear is also controlled directly via Hardware which can be accessed and controlled via phone and via the internet via switches that have their own IP addresses and RS-232 controll. At work, my notebook PC usually is running on my desk with Ham Radio Deluxe with one or two of the radios from home running remotely with the VGA out from one of the radios being streamed. The stream above is provided by Cam Radio Net.
My first real receiver at age 13 was a Halicrafters SX-101 which I purchased from an old ham who had an electronics surpluss store on the Main Street of Bay Shore, NY, where I mostly grew up. A paper route was my first source of funding for my Ham Radio "habit." Eventually, I picked up an Eicho 720 x-tal transmitter. Later, I found the matching VFO. Eventually, I was able to find the a.m. modulator. I usually fell asleep as a teen to the sounds from my SX-101 receiver. The Mercury vapor tube would cast the most beautiful shadows and hues of blue and grey at nighttime on my bedroom walls. The magic of radio still captivates me to this day. The station is ALWAYS being upgraded and changed. I enjoy PSK on 40 and 20 meters, although sometimes I will use phone.
I was widowed in May, 1991, when my dear wife passed away from cancer after a long fight which we fought together just after she helped me fight my battle with the disease which came back again after she lost her fight. Some how, by the grace of G-d, I am still here with my beautiful children and three new grand dauhters. I was left with 3 beautiful children ages 1, 2, and 3 when I lost my Cindy in 1991. My children are now grown. My son is married and gave me two beautiful grand daughters. My older daughter was recently married and gave me a very cute grand daughter. My youngest is living at home, but recently announced her engagement to a wonderful boy. My married son studies in seminary (Yeshiva, a Jewish seminary). I work as a PA in Gastroenterology inTowson, Maryland. My supervising physician is an incredible Gastroenterologist and I am privileged to be mentored by this talented man.
See ya' on the bands!

PY2KW, Nelson Pala was a phys. ed. teacher at Avare' C.E.E.N.Cel. Joao Cruz High School. He eventually became the principal and was admired by parents and students. He taught me and other students the first steps of marching band, volleyball and in the art of Ham Radio.
