I was team captain of the 3rd place U.S. NAVY NATO communications team at Amsterdam in 1969, finishing 4th individually (straight key sending) in the CW portion of the 10 country NATO competetion. I concluded my NAVY career as a 'advanced Morse' intercept instructor at Naval Communications Training Centre in Pensacola, Fla. in Sept.1972.
I have for the past 25 years helped do promotions & publicity for NASCAR driver & personnal friend RICK CRAWFORD.
I currently use a Ten-Tec Century-21 (digital), SWAN-270 / 508 vfo, SWAN-500C / 410 vfo & Drake 2-B/2BQ, R390A or SP-600-JX-17 for a monitor. When QRP I use a Heathkit HW-8, HW-9(WARC), ELECRAFT K1-4 (thanks to WN6U David), all with OCF dipoles & Drake MN-2000, MN-2700 tuners. A Vibroplex Presentation (1967), & Chinese straight key (K-4) round out the station. CW 100% .
Here I am having fun in my R/V at IOTA NA-213 (Dauphin Island, Ala.) just 17 miles from home QTH. I use a ICOM-735 (for QRO), Ten-Tec Century-21 (digital), ELECRAFT K1-4 or, the HW-9(WARC) when portable
The photo of the EC-121 (PR-21) is the actual aircraft the North Koreans shot down (April 15, 1969) & the one I flew in when it rotated to South Vietnam for duty.
"WE SERVED IN SILENCE", IN GOD WE TRUST , (all others, we monitor)
Needless to say,. I've obviously worked many overlapping jobs (simultainiously) for many years (on the record & off the record) & somehow managed to accumulate 23 years of Federal service for retirement at age 62 in 2009.
But,. I always found a way to "get on-the-air"
