The history of amateur radio at the University of Dayton goes back at least as far as the first chair of the then new electrical engineering department, Brother Ulrich Rappel, Society of Mary. His call sign was W8DOZ, issued March 10th, 1926.  The current radio lab, constructed in 1990, was donated by the estate of Marvin A. Mumma, whose life was particularly influenced by one UD electrical engineering faculty member, Brother Louis Rose, W8SLX (SK).  The original club call was KB8ZHO, replaced in 1996 by the vanity call W8DOZ in honor of Brother Rappel.

Over the years, the club has had varying levels of student involvement and differing capabilities.  Today, the members are all faculty and staff, but we'd like to change that.  There are three stations in the radio lab; a satellite station, a 10-80 meter HF station, and a VHF/UHF station, including six through 73 cm capability.  All have CW and phone capability, and we're working towards getting digital sound card modes on the HF and 6 meter transceivers.

Any UD community member is welcome to be a member. If you are interested, please contact the club trustee, Maurice Riggins, AB8XA.
