I was first licensed as KN4BOM in 1955 at the age of 12 in Memphis, Tennessee (read story). I was very active mostly on CW during the great sunspot years of the late 1950s. While still in high school, I earned a DXCC and amateur extra. Then I went to college in 1960 at MIT and got a PhD in physics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1969. My professional interests are in experimental plasma physics and nonlinear dynamics (chaos). I am currently an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin. I was only on the air sporadically over the past 50 years, but now in retirement, I'm chasing DX on CW again, contesting, and trying out SSB for the first time, although the cute little ICOM IC-718 shown in the photo above has now been replaced with a more respectable ICOM IC-7600.
