Click for more detail... I was born on May 17, 1944. I was attracted to amateur radio at an early age, and held the callsign of WN4BST while in high school (about 1961.) Although my code speed was 20+ wpm as a Novice, I never pursued the hobby until my last year in the Navy, while stationed at Millington, Tn. In 1967 I obtained my Conditional Class license, and was licensed as WB4GQA. I upgraded to General and Advanced in 1968, and finally to Amateur Extra Class in 1988. I retired early, at the age of 48, from my own heating and air conditioning business. I was a music major in college (trumpet), and am involved once again in music, playing lead trumpet in a 14 piece "Swing Band", a 10 piece "Swing Band" and work with several combo groups, including my own. I have been very fortunate to have been able to pursue this hobby at an early age. I have many fond memories, and have met many friends through the airwaves these past few years. I am a Life Member of the ARRL, and in 1998 was selected to serve on the first "Presidential Roundtable." After 24 years of marriage, my XYL, Joan, decided to get involved in the hobby. In May of 2000, she passed her General Class license, and has the call sign of KF4UMI. So, gentlemen, there is always hope for your XYL's! My home station presently consists of a Yaesu FT-1000MP, a Kenwood TL-922A amplifier and a TH7-DXS tri-band beam atop a Rohn 48 foot tiltover tower, as well as (3) two meter mobile rigs and a couple of handhelds. I also use an 80 meter Carolina Windom for the lower bands, and have a 17 meter loop installed off of the side of the tower. I enjoy DX'ing and ragchewing. I also operate mobile frequently, and my station consists of an Icom 706 MK II G with an Clear Speech Base and a LDG RT-11 tuner going to a Hustler antenna mounted at the rear of the automobile. In the month of January, you will probably find me operating on the West Coast of Florida, using a 40 meter Carolina Windom, and the Icom 706 MK II G. Joan and I taught at a Boys Science Camp for several summers in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. I taught Ham Radio and Archery, and she taught Photography as well as Arts and Crafts. I was responsible for 28 new Novices and 2 upgrades in the summer of 1999. I am a strong advocate of getting more youth into our hobby. The website for the camp can be seen at: http://www.watonka.com Besides ham radio, I enjoy motorcycling and have a 2007 Goldwing (Dark Red Metallic) with a matching 2007 Escapade Trailer. In addition to motorcycling, I enjoy golfing, fishing, traveling and especially being with our "two year old" daughter, Gypsy Ryder, who just happens to be a really cute Rat Terrier!
