In April 1971 WN 8 HIPPIE YIPPEE RADIO. (His phonetics for me that day) sat at the sending table in front of Dick Cotton and a room full of examines at the Detroit field office. His reaction to the long haired 16 year old kid in front of him would have been comical if not directed my way.
The scowl faded and the bushy eyebrows went up when I started to send, a smile almost crossed his face, stopping at his eyes, not quite making it the rest of the way down. I had fallen in love with CW and was proficient at over 20 wpm with a hand key by that time and man was that a sweet key they used,.anyway my problem was studying and the hard part for me was the theory, not the code. Ed Adams W8BX was out front chatting with my Dad. ex military guys (Dad had a 3 purple hearts in WW II one pinned on by Eleanor Roosevelt, , a Silver and a couple Bronze stars) , so they hit it off they were reliving some New Guinea Campaign and a Lt. Col. they both knew, when I exited the exam room, Dick came out shook Dads hand and said "The kid did O.K" he'll get his ticket in about 8 weeks. *TOP O THE WORLD MA* The next week I took some of my lawn mowing, grocery bagging, snow shoveling ect. money and Ordered the SB-102 from Heathkit. With Chuck Phelps WA8UCS's help It was complete by June and I sold my HW-16 to a new novice I had met on the air. and WB8 HANDSOME YOUNG REBEL was born.
Member of The National Teenage Radio Society, N.T.R.S grew into a group of over 40 Teenage hams who met on 3925 khz to do home work, Make Phone Patches to Girlfriends and generally Goof off as much as possible. WB8HYR became N8HHH in 1986 and N.C.S. of the H.H.H. Net WAS # 334 and 3905 CENTURY CLUB N.C.S Award # 32 (Thanks Don W4PNV). /\.and KG9QI in 1999. Now a KNOW code Extra, I Can be found on 40m C.W. 7010 - 7030khz 02:00 to 06:00 Zulu, weekends. Dust off that key and join the fun. REMEMBER THAT 1ST CW QSO?
In July 1970 I passed my novice exam. After 7 weeks wait (this is a while ago) The ticket came in the mail.
However once I passed the CW test I left my Ameco code record (33 1/3 lp) on the shelf. Question: Does anyone remember taking their exams in front of Ed or Dick at the old F.C.C. Detroit Field Office? .Boy I was sweating bullets that day. Air Force M.A.R.S license AFC8HYR. thanks to Dave WA8NOO.
THANKS FOR LOOKING And B.C.N.U. ON THE AIR. 73, WAYNE ///`
