Hartland Point is a 325 ft (99 m) high rocky outcrop of land on the northwest tip of theDevon Cost in England which marks the western limit (on the English side) of theBristol Channelwith theAtlantic Ocean continuing to the west. This location was known to the Romans as the "Promontory of Hercules

Hartland Point Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1874 (under the direction of Sir James Douglass) to help vessels of all types approaching the Bristol Channel
The lighthouse has been threatened by the undermining action of the sea so rock had to be broken from the cliff head behind the lighthouse to form a barrier against the waves. This was done several times as the barriers were washed away when there was a North Westerly gale with a high spring tide at the same time. A permanent barrier was built in 1925 , a sea wall 30 metres long and 6 metres high .
Before automation 1984 the station was manned by 4 keepers who lived with their families in dwellings attached to the lighthouse . These were demolished to allow for the construction of a helipad next to the tower. The lighthouse is now monitored from
