WN7TYN was issued to Joe in July 10th of 1953 at 1234 W. Silver Street. Butte, Mt. The original station was a Hallicrafters s-38 with a S/N 12 Heathkit At-1 25 watt Tx. A windom to a signal pole of the BA&P RR was the antenna. This was the era of surplus GI radio's. ARC-5 BC-600 series. My first VHF rig was a converted ARC-4. The hams of Butte were very fortunate to have the talants of W7EMF Bill Whipple and his basement "magic warehouse". If Bill had it the item was yours. My first novice test was given by Jack Picard W7JFR , now a silent key. 30 years later I sat for a test in Spokane with my son Mark N7AMZ. Joe has held this call since 1952 and had station locations at the following sites: Fort Ord , Ca Anaconda, Mt Scappoose, Or Portland,Or. W7TYN along with Harry W7RZY were the first OSCAR satellite stations on in the state of Montana. Joe is now retired and living in Portland, Or
