**** Here is some of the history of the W5VHF "Weak Signal Society".

It was the brainchild of Myron K4YA. He felt we needed something to "glue together" the VHF-UHF activity in our area. He spoke to Sam K5SW & Sam came aboard. Myron found out that the call W5VHF was not assigned so he told Sam K5SW, so Sam went to work to obtain that call for our group.

The organizational meeting was set for Saturday August 21st 1999 at the Northeastern State University Campus in Muskogee

The organizational meeting was attended by-

K4YA

K5SW

WD5AGO

W0PW

K5PJR

W5PIC

& maybe others that I forgot.

From that meeting Sam K5SW obtained the call sign "W5VHF" & became trustee of W5VHF call sign.

Myron K4YA came up with an idea for a newsletter called "THE BEACON" & then was able to published four (4) issues of the clubs newsletter before he retired from NSU & moved from the Tahlequah, Ok. area to Eastern TN , the area he grew up in

In time I or someone will try to add copies of the Newsletters in PDF form.

Here is a copy of one of the newsletters-

We had no plans to have "Regular" in person meetings, just "impromtu" gatherings. However at each Green Country Hamfest we began to met informally & at the 2000 Hamfest San, K5YY, gave a talk to encourage hams who had a desire to get into VHF-UHF WEAK SIGNAL work on SSB & CW, & later we added the Digital mode for those interested.

We began to have area gatherings-

The First one was at K5YY's home in Springdale, Ar.(at that gatherimng was K0ETC from MO & W0RT from KS, with (W6CL, N6CL, K5SW , K4YA (OK), and K5YY (AR),

a 2nd at Sam's K5SW Muskogee home ,(N5OSK & WB5YWI attended).

a 3rd at Charlie's K5TTT in Tulsa,

a 4th at Tommy's WD5AGO in Tulsa (that gathering was attended by W0RT (KS), KB0HH (KS), W5VTM,K5SW,W7QJQ & K5GR (ALL OK), maybe others that I forgot.

We began to grow with hams from OK,KS,AR & MO in our group.

In about 2009 K5SW began a weekly net on Tuesdays on 144.190, later that net then moved to Mondays at 8PM on 144.190 with Jimmy KD5ZVE EM26 as NCS. We now run anywhere from 28-34 check ins from 7 States ( OK,MO,AR,KS,LA,TX & TN) each week.

At the Green Country Hamfest for March 9th 2013 in Claremore we will have another "impromtu" gathering of the members.

I (K5SW) am going to begin to tell some of the history of the VHF-UHF bands. As well as who were some of the earlier operators.

Up until WW2 the VHF bands were-56 to 60 mhz 5 meters & 112 to 116 mhz 2 1/2 meters & there were higher frequency bands, but I don't think they were using them in our area.

After WW2, the hams were allowed back on the bands now changed to present day frequencies on 50 to 54 mhz 6 meters & 144 to 148 mhz 2 meters.

In Oklahoma some of the earlier ops were-

W5DFU Tulsa

W5HXK Watonga

W5HTZ Wewoka

W5JME Oklahoma City

W5MFX Enid

W5PZ Ponca City

From the nearby states I knew of-

W5RCI Marks, Ms.

W5AJG Dallas, Tx.

W5KFU Dallas, Tx.

W5NU Savoy, tx.

W5SFW Amarillo, Tx.

W5MJD Amarillo, Tx.

W5SWV Denison, tx.

W4HHK Collierville, Tn.

W5FYZ Minden, La.

W5ML Oil City, La.

W9AAG Il.

W9MAL Il.

W0EMS Omaha, Ne.

W0WKB Ankeny, Ia.

W0PFP Ia.

W0EYE Ward, Co. (later W0PW Mo.)

I'll sure add others as more info is sent to me.I know Kansas City was a "hotbed" especially on 50 mhz as 50 mhz WAS #1 & 2 came from that area, as well as St. Louis was a "hotbed".
