Richard - G0OII- began 'amateur life' as 'G1PAP', back in the early 1980's, taking the present call-sign in 1989. This validates his claim of being 71 years young! Much time has been spent '/M 'while travelling throughout most of the UK. This interest in mobile working brought about the original interest in looking to set-up a 2m voice repeater for the Yorkshire Coast and neighbouring Ryedale areas of North Yorkshire. Ultimately 'GB3YC' was born. Its history changed when the Octon Cross site went 'digital' and became the d-Star repeater 'GB7RW'. The 'RW' suffix is in memory of SARS late member now silent-key Robert (Bob) Wilkinson - G4YKO.
Richard is QRV on HF,VHF,UHF and DV/FM, had been a Chairman of G4BP - S.A.R.S., (Scarborough Amateur Radio Society and was the founder, Chairman / Keeper of GB3YC, the Yorkshire Coast former analogue 2m voice repeater. He is a member of S.S.E.G., the Scarborough Special Events Group. In 1992 he founded the 'radio club twinning' with Scarborough's twin town of 'Osterode am Harz', situated in the mountainous Harz region of central Germany. This healthy 'funk-amateur' friendship with German colleagues has flourished, many 'family friendships' have spawned, that have brought about reciprocal exchange holidays and hf sked's to this day.
Much has changed in amateur radio since Richard became licensed. The former 'regional' 2m repeater for Scarborough and the North Riding of Yorkshire is now the d-Star repeater GB7RW which' radiates extremely well over an area from a new site at Robin Hood's Bay. An anologue voice repeater has recently come back into limited service and taken the call-sign GB3YC currently with 'work still in progress'.
