Ham Member Lookups: 1975

I have been licensed since 1979 and my main interests are military radios, 5Mhz VHF and also on 2 metres FM, 4 metres FM and 6 metres FM . I also set up and moderate groups on Yahoo for the VHF Clansman families particularly the 351/352 and 353, VRC 321 and the Clansman Skeds group.

Radio gear

  • two Clansman PRC 320's . One which is USB only for 14 Mhz-28Mhz and an LSB version for the bands below 14Mhz. I am also to be heard occassionally on 5Mhz. I mostly listen rather than operate.
  • On 4 and 6 metres I use a Clannsman PRC350 PRC 351and a Clansman PRC352 and now got a Clansman 5.4 metre mast which I use to put up the Clansman inverted V for HF and also the EKGSA for VHF
  • I have an operational Wireless St No 19 Mk III/T kit which is the tropicalised version. Of course the tropicalised version is just what is needed on the cold North East coast of England ! It is more a museum type exhibit.
  • A 19 set that was re-built by the REME in the late 50's/early 60's and this is being put back into operation as a mor practical 19 set.
  • For 2 metres I have a Storno 6000 ex Metrpolitan police radio,IC-E80D , IC-E880D and a 2 metre Wouxun handheld. My D Star DTMF code is 2945.
  • I also have an FT857 . I have a lot of noise on the lower frequency HF bands so I use a fractal magnetic loop on 3.5/5/7MHz which has helped greatly in working the lower frequency bands.

The picture shows one of my backpack UK/PRC320's in a British army bergen bag and a hand crank generator to charge the 1Ah battery.

In general, I mostly prefer restoring  old radios or listen, rather than talk, so I am not to heard that often, perhaps on 2 metre simplex from the car.  I also run WSPR and PSK-31 using the FT857 with 5 watts, mostly on 40 metres unless 10 metres is open.
