Background - Licensed since October 2011 after a 6+ earthquake hit Washington DC in August. This event and the events of 9/11, when I was the engineering director at Quantico Marine Corps Base, convinced me of the need of alternate communication capabilities. Sat for the technician class and passed the general test. Upgraded to extra in 2014.
Personal History - Licensed as a civil engineer in the state of California I am a career civil servant who has worked for the United States Navy and Marine Corps for almost 20 years. Worked for the Seabees in Washington, DC; San Diego, CA; and Naples Italy (12 years overseas). Currently the Chief of Engineering and Design for the Smithsonian Institution since 2010.
Amateur Activates - Member of two local Fredericksburg, VA radio clubs: Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club (RVARC) and Stafford Area Radio Association (SARA). RVARC is very active in supporting public service events such as: Marine Corps Historic Half, century bike rides, triathlons, ultra-marathons, Special Olympics, etc. RVARC supports 12-15 public service events a year. SARA provides support to the Stafford County Emergency Operations Center which frequently activates during weather events throughout the year.
Regularly act as net control for RVARC ARES net every Thursday night 2100 hrs. on the 147.015 K4TS repeater. Public Service events coordinator for RVARC. Occasionally active on HF mainly 80, 40, 20 meters.
