Licensed early 90's, was only on air for about 6 months when life and work got in the way, more so than ever, I never was able to get back on the air until recently. I retired in 2005 not long after moving to the Central Coast of NSW, Australia and now have some time for myself and to get back on the air. My original call was VK2IPT, but applied for a 2 letter call when they became available, so now I am VK2HK, I still hold my old callsign as well. I am the currently the Sysop/Admin for the DStar repeater of VK2RAG on-air in August 2009 and VK2RHK, on-air in March 2010, I also host XRF500 and DCS028 Dstar reflectors and I am trying to be on-air more these days and to get around the world via DStar using the 92AD, 2820, 880, DV Dongle and DVAP. I have purchased a "One Man Tower" that I erected at my last QTH and have moved it to my new QTH, more info about that below.
As well as my radios, I have a passion for the American Muscle Cars of the late 60's and 70's and have purchased a 68 Camaro that I am gradually restoring, although driving a Left Hand Drive car in Australia is not always easy, I have decided to keep it LHD and original as possible, although retired I still find I run out of time to do everything I would like to. Update on the Camaro is that it is now back on the road and I enjoy driving it and hopefully will get more time in this summer (2011) Also late in 2010 we purchased an 88 TransAm GTA, it has been converted to RHD, so the wife can drive it. We were hoping to get to the USA to travel the old Route 66 starting in Chicago and driving to California via Vegas, also want to visit Dallas, then drive to Memphis, Nashville and work our way to Chicago and we are looking forward to doing this trip if at all possible, I am hoping to get back to Dayton again in the next few years and may incorporate my Route 66 with that visit. Whilst travelling Route 66 I will also have the radio with me and will try to contact many amateurs along the way.
I visited Dayton Hamfest in 2010 for the first time with a couple of other Ozzie Amateurs and had a great time, the size of this event was eye opening for me, seeing as I'm from Australia and our biggest hamfest, held by our own club (Central Coast Amateur Radio Club Inc) is a fraction of it's size. I had a great time and met people I had talked to on D-Star during the year.
September 2012 was a new experience again as I visited the Tokyo Ham Fair, along with my Son, Leigh (VK2LEA), we had another couple of Ozzie Hams with us as well and had a great time.
As of the end of 2012, I moved to a new QTH and what I thought would be only a few months to get my Shack up and running turned out to be nearly 2 years and whilst getting this done I was limited to local repeaters and Dstar contacts.
In November 2014, I finally have a Tower up, not large as we are restricted here in NSW, but have my 10Mtr "One Man" Tower, with a 23cm, 6,2,70 and HF 4 band beams up and running, seeing as this has happened just recently I am still doing some fine tuning to the beams, I also have my Dstar Repeater running here as well, "VK2RHK" and the last thing on my list (for now that is) I have to clean up the shack, although I transferred what I had in my old location and virtually just dumped in place I now find that due to the room layout being much different from my old shack and trying to set it up the same way as I had makes for the radio layout to be untidy and no room to move so I will undertake to pull the whole thing back down and rebuild the shelves etc to make it more user friendly and less cluttered.
My passion for my Muscle Cars has not drindled but due to family illhealth I have had to contain myself a bit but have now booked my flight for April 2015 to do Route 66, unfortunatley I cannot stay for Dayton in May returning to Australia only a few days before that date, so that may not happen again. I will be "on air" as much as possible on this trip and will update my Bio on my return.
When mobile you can track me via APRS/DPRS using VK2HK-9
