My Micro Shack-Its a bit cramped!

Cavra IRB 1

Hi, My Name is Karl, I live in a small village not far from Cardiff, at the beginning of the Rhondda Valley's called Beddau, originally a small Welsh Mining village. (upper right, small Photos)

New Updated Shack Photo as of March 2015, Its getting there, Shame about the bank balance :-(, What the heck, you only live once, Its just a good job the XYL is more understanding than my Bank Manager. Yes its a mess! but i only have a very small shack :-(

Some Backround,I passed my UK foundation licence, In July 2012, along with my eldest son, Garry (MW6CDZ) who was just 11 years old at the time. As of March 17th 2015, I have now passed my UK Full (Advanced) Licence, I was formally 2W0CWL

I take pride in working as far as i can with the least power needed, I get satisfaction knowing my antennas are working efficiently (often against the odds given my QTH) rather than simply just throwing power at it.

I'm looking forward to some sort of summer here in the U.K. this may be a long wait! :-( , So i can get out and go QRP with my FT817 up on one of our fine hills and mountains.

Aside from my radio interests, you can see, i like to play the Guitar, I also enjoy Motorbikes and currently ride a Suzuki 1200 Bandit and a Yamaha XS 650 twin, which i restored (this is an American Import from the late 1970,s).

I'm a Volunteer for C.A.V.R.A. (http://www.cavra.org.uk/) A Local Search and rescue/Swift water/Flood rescue and independant life boat.

I also volunteer as a First Responder for the Welsh Ambulance Service as well as being the Group Controller for Western Valleys Raynet.

So,Back on the radio's (when i get chance to use them!)

We both (my son and I) operate from my base station, currently ( my son is limited to 10 watt on his call) this is either through a Western HF 10 mounted in a tight horizontal "V" configuration (not ideal but we are stuck for space) or a vertical Sigma Euro HF-360 or an Easy wire.

I've  added (January 2013) an MFJ 1786 Mag loop mounted verticaly, approx 8ft off the ground , this antenna is proving to be a big suprise! its getting very good results on 20mtrs on transmit, working wonders with 50watts, on phone. I can highly recomend this antenna if your struggling for space, its only 1 mtr diameter! and wonderfully quiet, if like me you suffer with unwanted RF Noise

I run a Yaesu FT8900 as a 2mtr/6Mtr and 70cm mobile setup and an FT897 with AT897LDG tuner as a Base/Mobile DX setup, Icom 7410 and 756 Pro 111 Base HF and a IC7100 for D star and HF, Along with a Icom E92/E80 for a handies on 2mtr and 70 cm band with D star .

Diamond V2000 co-linear being the chosen VHF/UHF antenna

Not forgetting an old Motorola GM350 converted to run on 4 mtr bandas well as the 7100, i'm still experimenting with home brew antenna for this set.but best results are still with a Sandpiper 5/8 ringbase, works very well indeed, but its up at about 40ft on a pole .

I'm totally addicted to the hobby, I love the electronics and "hands on " side, I spend hours on the bench making projects and adding to my growing list of test gear.

I am part of the team responsible for the GB7CW DMR repeater.

Heres to working many more contacts far and wide.

Many thanks to all those who have spoken to me and inspired me to get my full call

e-QSL Cards Welcome, Thanks
