The Chapel of S. Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Theotokos.

The ancient synagogue of the village of Bar‘am, nestled in the mountainous Upper Galilee northwest of Safed, is an opulent structure built of large and beautiful ashlars, attesting to the presence of a thriving Jewish community here in the fourth and fifth centuries CE.

Bar'am was established in ancient times as a Jewish village. At an unknown point between the 7th and the 13th century, Jews abandoned the village. After a period of Muslim inhabitation, by the 19th century the village was entirely Christian, comprising Maronites and Melkites. A church on the site, the Maronite church, is maintained and is in regular use.

HOCOTA Program - operation alert # 2  for  January 28th 2017

Program name: I.A.R.C  HOCOTA (Holy land Christianity On The Air)

Date of special operation:  January 28th 2017 (Saturday) between 0600-1330 GMT (estimated).

Call sign- 4X0B (special call IMOC approved)

Program section and number: BP-01 (Baptism  section)

Place of operation:  Qasr al-Yahud (10 km east of  Jericho)

Site nature and significance -Christian tradition marks this site as the place of the “spiritual birth” of Jesus, as opposed to his physical birth in Bethlehem. As such, the baptismal site is of great sacred significance - the third holiest site in the Christian world (after the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem).

According to various traditions, the site is also believed to be the place where the Children of Israel crossed the Jordan River and entered the Holy Land after their 40 years of wandering in the desert.

Another event attributed to this site is Elijah’s ascension to heaven in a fiery chariot after he and Elisha crossed the Jordan: “Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.” (2 Kings 2:8)
