James Brooks 9V1YC and Chris R. Burger ZS6EZ operated from Layang Layang in the Spratly Islands from 8 to 14 May 2016.

The sun threw a tantrum while we were there, resulting in disturbed conditions. We also had electrical noise and intermittent power failures. Nevertheless, two guys with radios and verticals made almost 11 000 contacts on 3,5 to 28 MHz; mostly CW, with a little SSB.

Here is the story, as told by one of the operators. A more radio-focused story will appear in the amateur radio press soon.

QSL and Log:

QSL via ClubLog OQRS. Direct and bureau cards are available. Donations are not required, but are much appreciated.

Those requesting direct cards via the OQRS got LotW uploads when the cards were dispatched. The complete logs were uploaded to LotW in early 2017.

Please use the OQRS for all QSL requests. If you have a log query, please use the email address listed. Do not harrass the operators!

Airmail is not recommended, but if you really insist, you can try via ZS6EZ. Do not use registered mail.

Status report:

Blank QSL cards were sent from Europe in Mid-July 2016, and finally surfaced in South Africa in September, after we lodged a complaint with the Post Office in Europe. We processed all pending requests within a week. Very few requests are now arriving. In future, we'll try to deal with pending direct requests roughly quarterly.

Direct cards:
Responses to all direct OQRS and airmail requests were hand-delivered to the Johannesburg International Mail Centre on 2016-09-12. Direct requests (OQRS and airmail) to the end of 2017 have been mailed. Incoming mail seems to be delayed significantly, so many airmail requests may still be in the pipeline. To avoid mail loss, we hand-deliver outgoing mail to the international mail depot at the airport. As the largest volume of requests has petered out, these trips may not take place as regularly as late requesters would prefer. We'll list each batch as it is mailed.
Airmail requests cleared: 2016-09-12 11-03 11-28 2017-04-10 2018-01-01

LotW uploads:
All major donors and supporters: during 2016-05.
Direct OQRS requests: 2016-06-07, 09-06 and 11-03.
All others 2017-01-04.

ClubLog corrections:
2016-06-07 and 07-07 (up to date up to the end of 2017).

Bureau cards:
OQRS bureau responses were delivered to the ZS QSL bureau in September. The next bureau batch has been printed and will be delivered during 2018-01.

Important notes:

1. Please do not send the operators email. Use the address provided above. Operators will not respond to email at their personal addresses.

2. Please do not send direct or bureau requests to the operators. Please use the ClubLog OQRS (Online system), or if you really have to send snail mail, try via ZS6EZ. Mail is less reliable than OQRS, so if you use this option, you're on your own.

3. Please do not send the operators email. Use the address provided above. Operators will not respond to email at their personal addresses.

4. Please do not send the operators email. Use the address provided above. Operators will not respond to email at their personal addresses.
