SKCC #1555S, FISTS #12296, FPQRP #1309, FH #1358, NAQCC #1839.  I forget my SOC #

Clubs: Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club (www.brarc.org) and Amateur Radio Society at LSU (k5lsu at www.phys.lsu.edu)

I work mostly CW and digital modes. I am happy with getting eQSL or LoTW, or direct if you wish. I am good in the W5 buro and the SKCC buro.

I am a physics professor at Louisiana State University (www.phys.lsu.edu). I grew up in McLean, Va, just outside of Washington, DC. I graduated from Univ. of Virginia in '75 and finished my Ph.D. at Stanford in 1981. I had postdoctoral research positions at Univ. of Chicago and Cornell Univ. before ending up in Baton Rouge.

I had wanted to get a ham license since I was 13. The 5WPM Morse code test was too daunting for me then, and I could not afford the equipment that a Tech license would have required. After Hurricane Katrina, I resolved to get a ham license and help the next time we had a disaster. So, I bore down and studied. The Morse code tutor programs made a world of difference. I took the 4 elements of the FCC test and passed them all in Oct 2005, even though the examiners kept yakking with each other all the time through the General and Extra class exams; perhaps that was the rarely administered "concentrating with QRM" part of the test :). So, with the kind help of several local hams, I took my first steps. Morse appealed to me in its simplicity and its challenge. After 6 months I was at 10 wpm and I now am comfortable at 18. Regular practice does wonders.

I run ham radio classes for the LSU ballooning program (www.laspace.lsu.edu) and also assist with the LSU balloon launches both in Louisiana and at the Columbia Balloon Facility in Palestine, TX.  I am also the faculty advisor for the Amateur Radio Society at LSU (K5LSU, W5YW). I hope to hear you on the air.
