Born in Denver, raised all over the map (mil spec family). Settled in San Jose area 1972. Wanted a communication system on the sailboat that was better than marine VHF. HAM radio to the rescue. The marine nets were of great assistance and comfort while cruising Mexico. Returned to San Jose, got married retired to Redwood Valley which has 3 stop signs, no stop lights, or street lights, 2 bars, one gas station and a grocery store. Now I piddle with my vegetable garden, fish, and of course amature radio.

My Flex-radio 3000 replaced the old IC-735 from the boat is connected to an AL-811H 800 watt linear and LDG At-1000pro tunner.  The 200 ft. of LMR600 feed line goes up the 55' tower to a tri-band beam and 8 band vertical.  A G5RV dipole gives me good service on 80 and 160 meters.

Our local HAM community is well orginized and has a couple of drills a year to be ready when (not if) the big earthquake happens here in northern Califorina.  During a recent exercise I was assigned to a Board of Education office that had no antenna.  I set my mobile dual band in the truck to cross band repeater and used my HT on 440 from the office to the truck which could reach the 2 meter repeater.  That worked great as did our county wide linked repeaters.  Mendocino is sparsly populated and has 2 mountian ridges between the valley floor and the coast.  In the past we would have an operator parked on a ridge to relay messages during exercises.  Now we have a new repeater and could use a few more.
