Dear YL, XYL and OM first something what is dear to my heart: PLEASE do something for QRZ.COM. They do a lot of things in the background what is not visible for us (but costs time and money), it helps us a lot... so help them - to help us...

If you send QSL card direct, please send no money or IRC. Hamradio is only my hobby...

I am "Made in Germany" and was born in 1954...

I have always been interested in “Radio-things” and technical hobbies. I also spent a lot of time listening to the Radio in the late 50ies, it had 3 strong spread SW bands. A lot of stations (Broadcasting, Radio amateurs and Ship to Land) were in AM. In the early 60ies I got an experimental construction set called “Radiomann”.

The Author led you through a fascinating series of simple explained test devices; there were only a handful of components (with a Germanium Transistor and a Valve – a Pentode) in the set; but everything worked fine and I had a lot of happy times with it.        This opened a great world for a child  ( by the way, I am still one) like me without knowledge of complex Math, Physic and others.   A bit later I bought a lot of books from “Heinz Richter”, he was the Author of very easy to understand books of all kind of electronic and there were a lot of schematics and constructions inside of the books. The text was held simple, without complex Math. Parallel to this I bought the complete experimental construction set called  “Electronic Labor X” from the same Author.

By the way, I still have got them all...    There was no Valve inside, but a lot of Semiconductors and very interesting things to realize; nevertheless the Tube Technology was and is my favorite playground. This was my way which lead me into my profession (I am sure it was the way of a generation of Technicians).  I did my Radio Amateur license in 1976, the first years only on 2m and 70cm with 10 Watt Output and only in SSB. Aftechanging the regulations I can use all bands without limits. Shortwave was always my world; I like to work in QRP, but sometimes in whatever  “QRM – Situation” – with  “Contest Modulation” and broad like a  “Panama canal”  I have to heat up my Gun. It is a “Challenger with a GS35b” from www.thedxshop.com.  –  fine  “ little Monster”. This is made like I would have done it, no complex Microprocessors inside; easy to repair if needed.

My other hobbies are: Motorcycling (I have got an old BMW R75/6 new bought in 1975 – this needs a bit of work on it); Photography (I did a lot of analog, now a lot of digital); long distance running (I was an Ultra-one ) but since 2005 I do only relax runs two or three times a week here in our beautiful  “Eifel – Hills”. And valve audio technology, I like the PPP Amps... there is a big one from my former instructor when I was an apprentice. He has been my "god-father", a wonderful soul and genius in valve things. I changed a lot in it, it is not yet ready.

I am QRV once a year for three weeks on holiday in the Bavarian part near “Prien” at “Chiemsee”. There is a hamlet in a small valley with absolute no QRM, and very much space to experiment with extremely long wire antennas. My favorite one is a “V – shape” pointing to East and West, each branch 15m high and each side 85m long with a 15m symmetrical feeder line connected to a Palstar BT1500 Tuner  - a fine thing.             But in 2015 I tested a Windom with a total lenght of 78m, at least 20m over the ground - the antenna was good BUT the conditions were misrableangry

At home I have got a Mosley TA 53-M, it works on 10, 12, 15, 17, 20m quite well; I bought it because it is compact – I have to respect the neighbor’s limits (double house). The coaxcable RF choke needed a change, it didn´t work on all freq. Therefore I had RF in the shack. I made two current baluns myself, core was the RK4 and coaxcable was DXW 142 (from DX-Wire). And I bought a commercial current balun from DX Engineering "BAL050-H05-A". The first was "a Reisert - one" with 12 windings and 270uH. The cables to the dipol were symmetric. This device made max. SWR 1:=>3   -   AND the DX Eng balun made the same SWR - hmmmmmmmm I could bite in it. The second balun was wound in one direction, 16 turns and nearly 300uH. Coaxcable from the box direct to the dipol connection - it works  - good bye RF in the shack and less QRM and SWR 1:<1.5 (it depends on the band).

Kreuzau itself, where I live is a larger village with nearly 5000 people. It is the last “flat part” before the “Eifel – Mountains”  ( hmmm much more lovely hills) starts. The Photos were taken direction SSE of Kreuzau on a little hill where we get our drinking water from called “Lohberg” (deep wells). In the distance you can see the gray wall of  “Sophienhoehe”, it is the dump of  “Rheinbraun”  “Tagebau Hambach” and “Tagebau Pier (not yet updated in Google Earth)” where they eliminate villages and dig big holes with “Monster machines” in the Earth… have a look at Google Earth. Now to the photos: The total view shows you on the right side at the horizon the 3 steam power plants near Cologne; the next city is “Dueren” it can be seen right hand behind Kreuzau the higher buildings. In the close up views you can see my antenna; the surrounding houses are a bit higher than mine.

My "Playstations" are:

From the old 2m 70cm SSB Days:
Icom IC202 ; Braun SE400; Microwave Transverter (2m down to 10m then up to 70cm)
The Shortwave - Section:
Ancient Trio Receiver 9R59; Icom Receiver IC R70; Yaesu FT7; Yaesu FT450D; Yaesu FTDX 5000MP; the newest Playmate is a Hilberling PT8000A - whow what a Machine...

And the PA is mentioned in the text above.

All best wishes hope to hear you soon – God bless you!
