 Robert (Bob) Walker

Many thanks for visiting my QRZ page my  QTH is the Village of Muri on the SE side of Rarotonga.  Muri is know for its beautiful lagoon   and several tree covered "motus" or small islands.  It is a popular spot for sailboarding and kite boarding, as well as swimming and snorkeling, and the ever popular lagoon cruises.

I first arrived in Rarotonga in 1970 to work as a Telecommunications Technician employed by  the Cook Islands Government looking after the radio communication to the 15 outer islands using 300w CW transmitters and a 1.5KW ISB transmitter for New Zealand which had 2 phone circuits and  50bd telegraph ,   I travelled to all the outer Islands many times , this was an enjoyable time for me.

It was at this time I met my beautiful polynesian princess Ana she was 18 and I was 23  we returned to New Zealand in 1973 where we were married and returned to Rarotonga in 1977 where we changed all the outer island communications to SSB using Codan 100W transceivers which made phone contacts from the outer islands to Rarotonga and New Zealand   possible, we also installed new antennas and solar panels for charging the radio batteries.

We returned to New Zealand now with 3 sons in 1982 where i continued working with Telecom New Zealand on moble radio, cellular systems,  broadband analouge and digital microwave systems ...for my last 4 years with Telecom I designed and delivered radio courses for the Telecom Training centre in Auckland New Zealand

I got my license in 1977 ZK1BQ and held ZL2BNB  in NZ, I left Telecom in  2007 and my wife and I retired to our little paradise of Rarotonga, any hams visiting Rarotonga plese drop in and say hi local number is 26320

Ham Radio in the Cook Islands

There are only SEVEN licenced Hams living in the Cook Islands.

One lives on  Penrhyn Atoll (IOTA OC-082) in the North Cooks; one on Aitutaki Island (IOTA OC-083);  the remaining five are on Rarotonga Island (IOTA OC-013)

NONE of the Cook Island hams are DXers, we all prefer to rag chew, so, if you are a DXer, please have patience with our operating procedures and please follow the DX Code of Conduct.  THANKS!
