Got interested in radio from 1979 after being trained at the Royal School of Military Engineering at Chattenden in Kent Introduced to amateur radio with G3XRE the station at the RSME signals wing.


First radio's used were larkspur A41 manpack and C42 vehicle mount!


Moved onto Clansman  PRC/VRC 320,321,349.351,352,353  Soldier carried and vehicle mount radios.


My trades were Combat Engineer, Plant Operator Mechanic (POM) and Combat Signaller.

Made it to Support Troop Staff Sergeant somehow! , now enjoying my pension from that!



First licenced in 1983 

as   DA2QJ   in Berlin ,West Germany as I took the RAE and CW test whilst in the military at the Berlin Army Education Centre. I then returned to UK in 1987 . Chesterfield decided to give me G0JKJ about six months later. Active in Warminster , Gravesend , Chattenden , Berlin , Hameln , Northern Ireland and Coventry whilst in the Corps of Royal Engineers 1979-2000.


Active on all bands until 2000 then got involved with the Royal Air Force Reserves in 2001-2013 helping out! 

Been away flying/operating to such exotic locations....  North and South America, Europe, Scandinavia, Africa, Asia ,Far East, Falkland Islands , Northern Ireland ,Six month tours of Kosovo and Bosnia , Iraq x 2 and  Afghanistan.


Flown around most of the world and enjoyed it!



Now finished 34 years in the military and working for BT (Openreach) as a network noise investigator in the Chief Engineers Department.

I am active on HF/VHF with SSB ,CW and data modes. On 2 and 70cm  Dstar/ FM in the Coventry area  on 145.250 mhz and on echolink on the computer and Ipad.

I use a bencher paddle key and also a Junker straight key in the shack. British Army key, leg mounted for mobile work.


Radio's used in the shack are the Yaesu FT1000MP with MD 100 microphone/ Heil proset elite headset.

FT450D on a Imax vertical.

V/UHF in the shack are a Kenwood TM-701E, Alinco DR590 , Icom ID-5100 ,Yaesu FT7900,  MC 60A mic. 

SignaLink, Cosycave SDR dongle and FRG7700 receivers for HF and data. Airband listening is covered by the Yaesu's and a old netset PRO-2032.

DVMega with Icom ID-31 for running a hotspot on UHF.

HF/VHF SSB Transceiver for mobile is FT857 with ATAS 120A and my mobile key .

V/UHF mobile is Icom ID-5100 for Dstar and FM. A  Yaesu FT7900r is also often in the works van on a Diamond SG7900 dual band vertical.

Portable capability from the garden shack in the summer with a Yaesu FT450d , Yaesu VX-3R , Alinco DJ-G5 , Standard C500 and various Baofengs. This is on a push up portable mast to a diamond x50 vertical.

Antennas used are homebrew wires for 80 - 10 m. Verticals for 10m-6m-2m-70cm at @ 25ft AGL at home.

Married to Tracey for 35 years with two boys aged 34 and 31 and still enjoying our little family.
