Hi there,

Thanks for looking at my info page.

I’ve been licensed since 1986 and have used my current call sign since that time.

I used to be more into home construction, but that took to the side line as eyesight and steadiness of hands falter with age :) .

But I do still have go at some things when it’s required.  (i.e. when I don’t have to use a magnifying glass to see what I’m working on).

Over the years I have played with most modes, including HF digital modes (PSK, RTTY, SSTV etc.).

Currently most of my time is spent using DSTAR on VHF & UHF. I’m usually monitoring REF001C or REF001D, and my local DSTAR repeater GB3VT (145.725MHz).

But can also be contacted using FM on 145.500, 433.500 & 1297.500 calling channels and also via GB3SE (1297.075MHz +6MHz shift, 105.3Hz sub-tone). GB3SE is also constantly in beacon mode when not being used as a repeater so just monitoring the output will usually indicated whether you’ll receive the repeater.

I do also occasionally monitor & use GB3ST (433.225MHz), GB3SM (433.325MHz) & GB3SX (50.790MHz), these 3 repeaters all also using CTCSS sub-tone of 103.5Hz.

I sometimes use HF although not as much these days as I have in the past, I don’t chase DX any longer, and much rather prefer to rag chew.

As seems to be the norm, I suppose at this point I should include a brief description of the equipment I use.

IC-7100, ID-1, IC-2820, IC-880D, IC-E80D, IC-E92D, ID-51, IC-T81E & various other Icom radios which are now a little long in tooth (circa 1980-90) most of which are serviceable but may require some TLC from time to time when the mood takes me.

FT-897, FT-857, FT-8900, FT-703, FT-225RD

TM-741 (23cm/70cm/2m), TR3200

SE-550 (aka Condor 3000) (68-88MHz) for use on 4m

MC-Micro  (4m)

Ranger 2790DX (10m/12m)

The form of DV-Mega I use is a 2m/70cm radio shield mounted on an Arduino as a single unit in a custom case and connected via USB cable to a Raspberry Pi Running G4KLX software. I’ve found the configuration of this little unit and the Pi to be extremely reliable and have had few problems. Even when the Mega/Pi system has failed investigation revealed the problem as user or setting error.

Where an external supply is required for any of the above this is from 7 individual high output (13.8V 30A+) power supplies, and some other smaller ones (2A to 12A) where other voltages are necessary.

These equate to current output far in excess of what is required any of the equipment. Reason for this is that from experience running power supplies at max for long periods of time just generates lots of heat and leads to failure of the equipment, so I now tend to only run a power supply at around 50-60% of it’s potential output. Some of the commercial supplies have had more heat sinking and extra forced air cooling added.

I also have other (Icom, Yaesu, AOR, Motorola) gear such as scanners & PMR radios, and test gear which occasionally get dragged into service when required.

If you have any of the radios mentioned above and need help using or setting them up, you can contact me using the email address here on QRZ, if I can help I certainly will.
