G2AS was the callsign of Howard V Booth, who was instrumental in the formation of the Sheffield Amateur Radio Club back in the early 1920s. In 1948, Howard emigrated, with his family, to Australia and became VK2AMD at Windang, New South Wales. From his coastal location at Windang, he made many thousands of QSOs, mainly with UK stations, and especially with friends in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire region. For many years he carried out twice daily skeds with Paul G3EQF and Gordon, G4SVU, both in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, until the former's death some years ago. Howard never lost his Sheffield accent, in spite of 60 years residence "Down Under" !

The photo below shows Howard as VK2AMD during the 1970s at his home radio shack at 53 Ocean Street, Windang, NSW, Australia. All this equipment was homemade. Outside was a 700 foot in each leg rhombic antenna extending over the beach!

In March 2008 Howard reached the ripe old age of 100 years and was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, active radio amateurs in Australia. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in late May of 2008, just a few days after his long time friend and fellow Sheffielder Peter Day, G3PHO, paid him a visit during a holiday in VK/ZL. Peter feels priviliged to have known him and to have shared several hours of nostalgic conversation with him.

In August 2008, Howard's sons Brian and "young Howard" very kindly agreed to his UK callsign being transferred to Sheffield Amateur Radio Club, as both they and the club were anxious to keep the memory of Howard alive for decades to come.

In November 2014, the callsign was officially transferred to the SHEFFIELD HF DX GROUP and will used in future by a keen group of local contesters and Dxers in major international contests such as IOTA, CQWW and for Dxpeditions.

Please note that it is no longer the callsign of Sheffield Amateur Radio Club.

At 1300 utc, Saturday 7 September 2008, G2AS/P went on air for the first time since Howard's passing. Peter had the honour of making the first QSO with this callsign in the RSGB SSB Field Day. Some 970 contacts were made over the 24 hour contest period, giving Howard's callsign a really good airing ... he would have liked that! Listen out for G2AS during many of the main world contests and radio events in the future.

In July 2015, the callsign, as GM2AS, was used on the joint IOTA DXpedition to the Isle of Arran for the IOTA Contest weekend. GM2AS was used for non contest callsigns under the Sheffield HF DX Group banner. All QSLs for this activation should go via G3PHO.

QSL CARDS: -------- All cards for either G2AS or GM2AS should go direct to G3PHO (QTHR) or via the bureau and clearly labelled "via G3PHO".  There will be no LOTW or EQSL logs.
