EARLY DAYS

Just before my 12th Birthday in July 1949 a friendly neighbour showed me the short wave bands on his broadcast receiver. I began listening at home on the family G.E.C. BC 4650. (See photo.). Those were the days of A.M. and with a short wire aerial it was relatively easy to hear Amateurs on 40 and 20 metres. Even C.W. could be decoded as an intermittent carrier. My first log (still retained) records “G2DC lives on Salisbury Plain(sic). Jack”, in qso with G3AMX. Shortly afterwards I was given an old naval B12, 0-V-2 receiver. C.W. was then easier to read with the reaction control. I was taught C.W. at The South Manchester Radio Club, which fortuitously met in Northenden, the south Manchester village where I lived. Mark Denny, G6DN, was Chairman and G3FSW the secretary. I owe them so much for their kindness in bringing me, a young boy, into the hobby. I constructed simple valve receivers and heard the world on a home brew Super-regen 1 valve, 955, in 1951.

Intervening years were filled with obtaining professional qualifications in banking and in getting married. In 1965 I acquired a Heathkit RA1 receiver and in 1969 I took and passed the RAE and Morse test. G3YGG took to the air with a K.W.Vespa and a Joystick!

1970 brought a move from Manchester to London with work. I chose a house with a long garden!
