Interested in all aspects of VHF DX operating, particularly 144MHz CW Moonbounce (EME). Past Chairman of the RSGB's VHF Contest Committee. Over 40 year's experience of dx-peditioning on U/VHF from many of the Islands in GM, OY & TF. I've also been active on 144MHz and 50MHz from SV9, SV8, SV5, EA8, EA5, CT3, 9H and CT7 using around 100W into collapsable home-designed yagi's, suitable for taking on an aircraft.

Fishing Pole Yagi's

Being interested in home construction, the antenna pictures on this site are my own design and built onto fibre fishing poles and so are extremely lightweight. I've been designing these ultra-lightweight antennas for over 15 years using first YO and then AO programs by K6STI. My goal was to make everything as light as possible and have done away with as much metal as possible. You'll see from the images that I've even used pipe clips and composite fibre plates to secure the mast to the boom. These antennas just lightly bend in the strong winds when more modest traditional arrays would have to be lowered. These designs featured on my web pages when they were active. Each antenna is around 4.6M in length and tapers towards the end. I have used plastic pipe clips of various sizes, which are secured to the boom with small rivets. Each clip has been drilled to accommodate the 4mm elements. The dipole has a direct 50ohm feed. Each antenna has a gain of 12dBd and the group of four spaced at 10ft (V) and 11ft (H) makes for a good winter antenna. One drawback is that these designs are quite critically tuned and so the SWR bandwidth is limited to around 600KHz, perhaps making them more susceptable to the effects of rain, ice and snow. Even so, I've worked some outstanding DX on them and appear to be quite competitive.
