I left school in 1962 and worked as a Radio and TV engineer for many years. First licensed in 1978, I joined the Northumbria Amateur Radio Club ( I hold the club call sign G4AAX) I did lots of home brew construction in my early years, still do some but not as much. Keen on RSGB awards, I gained 144Mhz senior award no. 162. February 1981. 432Mhz senior award no. 78. June 1982. 1296Mhz. senior award no. 10. September 1984. I was the first class B license holder to obtain a 70Mhz. senior award, no. 66. November 1996. I also hold the supreme award no. 47. July 1983. and 2320Mhz. standard award no. 2. March 2006. (this one took over 20 years to obtain) and numerous squares awards. I am a keen participant on Tuesday night activity contests, I am also a member of the Northern Fells Contest Group. I did sit the Morse exam in 1994 and gained my class A license also (G0UQD) but never had any interest in H.F. and let this call sign lapse when Class A license was released to Class B stations. Have spent some time building and operating on Nanowaves with a group that meet once a month with Stuart G8CYW, Brian G8KPD, Peter G8POG and Eddie G0EHV.  As I am now retired I have more time for Amateur Radio and my garden allotment.
