I passed the City & Guilds Radio Amateurs' Examination on  the 8th of December 1981 and was licenced on 19th. April 1982 as GM6HGF, and after passing the 12wpm morse test as GM4PPT on 23rd of October 1982.

Locator IO75SK (old XP48J) : WAB square is NS41, South Ayrshire : Book No.8202.

My main interests are VHF & UHF contesting, especially the RSGB UKAC's, ragchewing and WAB on 144Mhz only.

 Setup on 144Mhz is a Yaesu FT2000 with DB6NT TR144H +40 Transverter with a BEKO HLV-1000 SSPA and 2X 12 element M2 yagis with a GM3SEK- DG8 masthead Pre-amp  (January 2018) using Andrew LD-F450 feeder..

On 432Mhz, a Yaesu FT2000 with a DB6NT TR432H Transverter and a BEKO HLV-550 SSPA, Antenna is a 28 element M2 with Andrew LD-F450 feeder and MFG1302 LNA. (January 2018)

On 50Mhz infrequently with a Yaesu FT991 and 5 ele Tonna.

 Also 2 metre mobile operating in my Motorhome using a Yaesu FT857d with a handsfree mic, antenna is a 7/8th wavelength whip on 2 metres FM and a Wimo Big Wheel antenna on ssb whilst moving or a 10 ele Diamond or 3 ele Vargarda when parked.

On 432 Mhz  Mobile : FT857d Wimo 144 Big Wheel (works fine on 432)  and when parked, a 15 ele yagi from Diamond.

On HF : Yaesu FT991 and a W3DZZ Trap Dipole, inverted V.

Some of my other interests are, photography, Classic motorcycling on my1958 Royal Enfield 500ccMeteor Minor, building & flying radio controlled model aircraft, both fixed wing and rotary, listening to Wurlitzer pipe organs, Motorhome touring with Jemima my xyl of 51 years. Occasionally I operate on HF /Mobile with my Yaesu FT857d and an Atas 100 or single band whips.

I was a volunteer Morse Examiner for the RSGB and currently an assessor for the RSGB Morse Competency testing service.

I am a member of the British Railways ARS, Ayr Amateur Radio Group, GMDX VHF, RAF Waddington Amateur Radio Club and an associate of the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club in Cornwall.

I am a retired railway Freight Guard's Inspector (BR) and Groundstaff Standards Inspector (EWS) and served 29 years with BR and 10 years with EWS Railways.

I live in the village of  Coylton which is 6 miles east of the county town of Ayr.

A wee bit of 4th November sun so I got the bike out for a wee spin round the block and yes I did put on the leathers first!

Below : I was a Freight Guard working out of Falkland Yard, Ayr from 1974 until promotion to Inspector in 1989, this a self portrait at Kilwinning Yard in the 1980's, A "Little Red Caboose behind the Train" where I regularly operated on 2 metres FM with a Trio TR2300 radio, mostly whilst travelling on the G&SW line between Ayr and Carlisle.
