Born in Firenze (Florence, center of Italy) on 08/28/1958 I am doctor in Mechanical Engineering, and my present occupation is software production for workshop automation ( www.venturaplus.it ).

Licenced since 1994, but my interest in Radio and Electronics is ancient: about ten years old, I used to build some small crystal receivers, selling them to my school fellows.

My other interests are sports (diving and boxing) and trips around the world, especially Africa. In 1991 with some friends I crossed the whole continent, from Algers to CapeTown with my own car.

As ham, at the beginning my main interest has been to explore the complete electromagnetic spectrum, from VLF to UHF: my initial station was equipped with a set of log-periodic and broadband antennas:

For at least one year I had fun intercepting any type of transmissions: utilities, diplomatic RTTY, wheather satellite fax, aircraft beacons and the mysterious Numbers Stations. The Klingenfuss Utility guide was my Bible

But after so many hours spent reading "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" on my computer screen, waiting for something else, I realized that my real passion was DX-ing, and CW only: soon I disposed the mike into garbage, after several shocking experiences in SSB pile-ups.

Sometime I liked to participate to Field Day contests: here I am with Antonio, IK5HGL, in 1998

And here I am with my QRP Alberto (was 1996, now he is taller than me and absolutely NOT interested in ham radio...)

After few years my antenna farm was pretty changed:

Unfortunately, in late 2001, when I had 311 credited DXCC countries, a severe wind storm destroyed my two towers and all my antennas (God answered my neighbours' prayers?) Only the robust (and flexible) Force12, 3 els for 40mt, survived in the crash.

In 2010, after almost 10 years and with much more white hairs, I reactivated my licence, and now I am slowly rebuilding my antennas, starting with a homemade 2 els yagi for my favorite band, 30 meters (see picture)

The game goes on again!

Actually I have two stations in two different QTH: the first one (very basic) is located in Florence down town:

From here during the week I am active early in the morning with 10-50W, straight key and a 'stealth' antenna:

Recently (October,2010) the station has been enhanced with a beautiful Vibroplex Original De Luxe Model Morse Key, dating back to 1960 (thanks to Richard G7RVI) :

During the weekend I am often active from Viareggio, about 100 Km from Florence and very near to the sea. Here I run an Icom IC775 DSP and the 500W of an IC2-KL.

My last project has been to interlace the 30mt 2 els Yagi with a full size 3 els yagi for 20mt, on the same boom. The work is now finished (June 2010) and works fine, after some tuning problems...

thanks to the friends of ARI Fidenza forum for precious help and advices :

There is nothing more magic and beautiful than a great antenna clear in the sky !

almost nothing...

Another story is to convince seagulls that they should not use your antenna as perch

fairly large antennas means fun, but MAINTENANCE also!

Recent activities:

In November,2010 I participate to the International Exercise for Civil Defense TEREX 2010, as volunteer radio operator:

Below there is a script that I would suggest every DX-er should check and read very carefully! If we all make an effort and try to stick by the very simple and straight forward guidelines, the behavior on the bands will improve! And that consequently means more QSOs andmore chances for everyone to be into our most-wanted DX logs.

DX Code of Conduct

(Codice di condotta del DX)

I will listen, and listen, and then listen some more. (Devo ascoltare, ascoltare e ancora ascoltare)
I will only call if I can copy the DX station properly.

I will not trust the cluster and will be sure of the DX station's call sign before calling.

I will not interfere with the DX station nor anyone calling him and will never tune up on the DX frequency or in the QSX slot.

I will wait for the DX station to end a contact before I call him.

I will always send my full call sign.

I will call and then listen for a reasonable interval. I will not call continuously.

I will not transmit when the DX operator calls another call sign, not mine.

I will not transmit when the DX operator queries a call sign not like mine.

I will not transmitwhen the DX station calls other geographic areas than mine.

When the DX operator calls me, I will not repeat my call sign unless I think he has copied it incorrectly.

I will be thankful if and when I do make a contact. (Ringraziero' sempre alla fine del collegamento)

I will respect my fellow hams and conduct myself so as to earn their respect.
