Amateur Radio Station

QSL: Direct, LoTW, eQSL, or buro. Direct needs no green stamps or anything. Send me a card, you get one back, fair and square!

Originally from Maryland, US, I have lived in the city of Gifu in Japan since 1992. Starting out as an SWLer, I had a Novice class license in the US from 1986-1996 because of a high school club, but only worked CW at the club station, and never had any contacts other than through that station -- not much a high school student of that era could do with the meager funds at his disposal.

I decided to return to the hobby late in 2013 after 25 long years since that first QSO, successfully obtaining a Japan class 3 operator license in April 2014, and a US Extra Class license in June (callsign now NI3B).

I operate mainly on HF (40/20/15/10 meter bands via CW, SSB, and various digital modes), 6m SSB, 2m/70cm FM simplex mobile/portable (HF mobile in the future), 2m SSB mobile, and the occasional satellite work. HF station runs 100 watts, and mobile runs maximum 50 watts.

I operate both domestically and chase DX (including the occasional contest) so feel free to contact me in either English or Japanese.

Starting in 2015 I became active in amateur satellites. I now operate mainly with a Yaesu FT857D for the uplink rig, and a FUNCube Dongle Pro+ SDR dongle monitored by a laptop and SDRSharp listening to the downlink. I mainly work SO-50 (FM V/U), AO-85 (FM U/V), AO-73 (FUNCube-1, SSB linear inverting), and JAS-2 (FO-29, SSB linear inverting). The antenna is an Alaskan Arrow dual-band handheld yagi (pictured below). I record all of my passes and upload all the recording to SoundCloud.
