In March of 1967 I was first licensed as WNØRGV. Now celebrating 50 years as a ham!

Due to my recent retirement and change of QTH, I am currently QRT, but will soon be back on from EN35.

I am a recently retired professor of communication studies at a "liberal arts college" (small university) in northeastern Iowa, and now reside in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am a life member of ARRL and AMSAT and enjoy both HF and satellite DX. I hold DXCC Satellite certificate number 166, and am a member of the Minnesota Wireless Association and the Twin Cities DX Association.

After living in Cedar Falls, Iowa for 26 years, I took a one year work assignment in Nottingham, UK during 2011-12 and operated there as MØGZO. From fall of 2012 until spring of 2017 my QTH was in the extreme northeast corner of Iowa. I also operated in Malta as 9H3DJ from February to June of 2016 while on another work assignment.

I have just acquired a FlexRadio 6700, and hope to learn enough about it to put it on the air soon. My current rig is an Icom IC-9100, with an SGC 500 watt solid state "Power Cube" on HF. The primary antenna is a Tennadyne T-10, ten-element log periodic at 53 feet (16 meters), but because I am at the top of a high and steep hill, the antenna performs as if it were higher, particularly toward Europe and the Middle East. There's also a dipole in the trees for the lower bands, as can be seen below.

I am also quite active on satellites, using an M2 "LEO-pack" antennas on an az-el rotor. I recently added computer rotor control using a homebrew Arduino and K3NG software.

The satellite antenna system can be seen above. The M2 antennas, 436CP16 (left) and 2MCP8A (right) are mounted on a solid fiberglass boom which has been covered with heatshrink for solar protection. The rotors are a Yaesu G-5500 set. Below the rotor is a small solar panel which float-charges a storage battery for emergency station power. Behind the solar panel are mounted SHF-Elektronik Mini-2 and Mini-70 GaAsFET pre-amps.

I helped convince Glenn to take satellite gear to Navassa and provided some pointers on satellite operation.
