I started with SWL using a Hallicrafters SX-16 Super Skyrider that was old in 1964, and a slightly newer BC-348 left over from WW2. Eventually I bought a Drake 2B receiver. Growing up in Silicon Valley surrounded by Eimac, HP, Spectra Physics, IBM, etc meant parts and test equipment was always available, and the surplus shops were huge.

I spent many hours studying for the General written test. By 17 I had passed the Radio Telephone examine at the FCC office in San Francisco. I didn’t get a Ham license due to being stuck at 8 wpm and needing 13 to pass.

All of this lead into a career that spanned microwave devices, subsystems, and on to RF, IR, and digital systems for satellite and the government. I currently have a company that provides engineering services to large Aerospace companies.

Nearly 50 years later, October of 2015, I passed the Amateur test and got my first license. I was given AB1YE. Back in the 1960s they didn’t have “AB” calls, it was K or W,  so I got a vanity call with a K and my initials, K1HMS. I would pass the 13 wpm code test today and have set 20 wpm as my goal.
